Happy Leap Day!

Our Leap Day Post

While he wasn’t busy being the unrivaled leader of the Roman world around 46 BC, Julius Caesar hung out in Cleopatra’s capital city of Alexandria. It was there he met an old sage who introduced him to the Egyptian calendar, one that had a peculiar difference from the Roman calendar – the Leap Year.

It was for practical reasons that Caesar decreed that his empire too would follow a quadrennial leap year… if anything so Romans wouldn’t be stripping down to their itsy bitsy yellow polka dot Spring togas when it would be in fact, Winter.

However, while military prowess was his forte, Caesar’s math skills weren’t perfect, with the Roman calendar adding way too many days (as many as 80!) to the year.

Thank goodness, Pope Gregory XIII instituted the Gregorian calendar in 1584.

So that’s how we wounded up each having 1 extra day every 4 years. Making a total of 22.5 bonus days added to our lives, say if we live to be as young as Betty White. 3 extra weeks to do our favourite things at our favourite places, with our favourite people.

And that’s the beauty of time done right, it actually creates more opportunities for us to do what really counts, on the days that matter.

Kiiin regards the calendar as one of the greatest designs to date (pun unintended, swear by Caesar). The perfect grid in which we can plot our dreams and make them happen. While we celebrate this bonus day, do remember to also make the other 365 days of a “common” year, extraordinary.

We will all revisit the 29th of February once more in 2016, but today will never come again.

The Gentlemanly Way

There’s the old martial arts saying, “One must first learn civility before he learns the art, and one must first know his ethics before he knows his skills.”

Martial arts isn’t all about punching, kicking and screaming in a yellow jumpsuit and a neat bowl cut (just as Bruce Lee is much more than that). It is a remarkable way of life that emphasizes compassion, courage, peace and harmony.

At Kiiin, we believe it’s just as important to learn some basic self-defense in the creative world – to defend your rights, your thoughts, and your beliefs with heart and grace.

Our latest inspiration is Bartitsu – the martial art of gentlemen, originally developed in England during the transition from the 19th to 20th century. It may be referred to as the earliest form of MMA, incorporating skills from Japanese Jujitsu, European pugilism, and cane fencing.

We understand that your brand is under constant pressure from market fluctuations, fierce competition and cheats. That’s why we are here to help you retain brand integrity and grow from strength to strength in a way that commands respect, not demands it.

We’re hiring!

Kiiin is looking for a dedicated Account Executive to join our growing team.

If you’re only obsessed with financial targets, task-oriented at all costs, prefer the company of pigeons to people and enjoy spending more than 12hours a day behind the desk… you might not be the one we’re looking for (and probably a little scary).

However, if you are respectful of the client’s needs, value the creative process, take pride in being a team-player and recognize that a healthy work-life balance is crucial to doing a great job… Let’s talk!

All You Need is Love (Print Invite)

We love the Beatles. We love design. And we love a heartwarming story.

So when we were asked to meld all three together to create a fun wedding invitation card, it was impossible to say no.

Fresh off the press.

Front of the invite.

Card unfolds to show 3 panels per side. The front features the couple's parents in a style that pays homage to the Beatles' Let it Be album cover. The other side features a tongue-in-cheek timeline of the couples' relationship, while tipping our hat to the classic Abbey Road album cover.

Happy Mid-autumn Festival!

This year we decided to take a fun spin on the traditional mooncake for our clients and friends. We wanted the mooncakes to be different but still delicious – something Chang’e would eat by the boxful on a lonesome, moonlit night.

Our initial sketches

Our Moon-cakes! Defying gravity and your diet.

Thanks to Winnie and team from dessert.cup for their yummy interpretations of our designs. Our favorite flavor had to the “Blue Mooon” cupcake with its moist blueberry cake and french vanilla fluffy cream.

It was good fun creating our astro-cow and pretty therapeutic making those little flags.  So far we’re glad everyone’s lovin’ the moon-cakes… with blue lips and teeth all round as testament!

Can’t wait to explore more of the creative unknown. To infinity and beyond!
